Caterpillar 7-3-09  32mm long (A little over an inch)  The head is the part with the longer antennae.

Chrysalis today, that formed yesterday (7-6-09)

Have promised a friend a caterpillar to watch through chrysalis process, but outside caterpillar disappeared on us, so we found 2 more caterpillars outside and brought them in. One more for us to watch and one for her.  They really grow pretty fast.  The milkweed plants just grow, by our garage.

Oooo. That gives me an idea. You need a web cam. A butterfly cam!  Grin

That's a really nice pad you got going for your butterfly.  Cheesy

It's not very tall, though.  We keep wondering if there will be enough room for butterfly wings.  We will have to undo some of the staples to lift the screen up, to set it free.  The hole isn't very big, either. Tomorrow, we are going to PetSmart to buy a slightly bigger container, because we have 2 more caterpillars in the house.

One of the caterpillars is for a friend.  They came to get a caterpillar the other day, but he had disappeared to make his own chrysalis. So, the current caterpillars are in a Butterfly Pavilion, which is like a laundry hamper for butterflies!  LOL!  It has plenty of room.  Pop-Up Butterfly Pavilion

Critter Totes
We'd be getting the small container.  It's 9 x 6 x 6.5, so plenty of room for a butterfly to spread it's wings, before being set free.

That is so cool. We did this in our 4th grade class. It seemed much longer than 10 days for it to happen though. But that's a kid for you. Every day seems to last an eternity when you're anticipating something!

I can see monarch stripes through the chrysalis.  It's rather cool!  10 days or so, to a kid, can be an eternity!

Our butterfly hatched today.  Right AFTER I went to work.  I haven't seen it yet, since I'm still at work.  The wings were nice and orange, right before I left though.  You could see them through the chrysalis!  Kids took pictures, though.

Here's a pic of the first butterfly.  It's through the wall of the butterfly container.  This one is a female, because the veins are fairly wide and there are no black spots on the lower set of wings.

Here are pics of yesterday's butterfly. Yesterday's butterfly was a male.  He definitely has the skinnier veins and the 2 black spots.  The one outside may or may not be our male butterfly, but we'd only set him free about 15 minutes before the outside picture was taken, so it could be our male.  Anyway, it is representative of a male monarch.

Also, note that the chrysalis is clear, in the first pic and the features of a monarch are clearly visible.  This means emergence will be happening soon!

1. A pic of the chrysalis at 11:29 pm yesterday morning
2. A pic of the newly-hatched butterfly at 2:16pm yesterday
3. A pic of the wings looking more normal
4. A pic of the butterfly outside (possibly.  He flew far off, at first, but then we hung around outside a while and all of a sudden we see a male monarch?)

These are some caterpillars we still have in the house.  It's been fun watching them grow!  These are pretty young yet.  The caterpillars grow to about 1-1/2 to 2-inches, before they change into the chrysalis.

Wow Dawn, those are awesome pics.  How neat, I never knew how to tell the difference between a boy and a girl.  What a great cycle of life to watch flourish into a beautiful butterfly.

Those are great pics.  funny dance It's nice to know someone is involved in butterfly preservation.  Grin

I never knew you could tell the sex by the size of the veins and the spots. How cool. When I was a kid, everyone in town had some type of fruit tree. In the summer the Monarchs were everywhere feeding on the fallen fruit.

If you ever go to Georgia, go to Callaway Gardens. They have a butterfly house that is AMAZING. If you wear bright colors and put on sweet perfume/cologne or a little sugar water, the butterflies will land on you and you can see them up close.

We have a butterfly garden about an hour away, at the Milwaukee Public Museum.  Also, we went to visit one in Niagara Falls.  It is cool having the butterflies sit on you!  LOL!

Don't think I want bugs landing on me. Dave says I am the only person he knows that is afraid of butterflies. Not afraid.. but don't want them on me.

You silly girl. Butterflies don't crawl on you. They just land on you and flap their wings. If you have sugar water on you, they stick out their "tongues" and try to lap some up.

I guess it would freak you out to know that hundreds of worms cluster around the base of your eyelashes. Every human has them but you can't see them with the naked eye.  Evil
