This sweet bloodhound was found abandoned in the backyard of a Dothan, Alabama home. A best guess would be that she had been on her own for about a month. Thank goodness she had rainwater to drink or it would have been too late!

She was taken to the Dothan shelter held as evidence in, what we assume is a cruelty charge against the occupants of the house who can not be found.

The combined efforts of the concerned shelter manager at Southeast Bloodhound Rescue and Anna, concerned rescuer and president of Adopt-A-Rott based in Dothan secured the court-ordered release of the newly-named Mabel into Anna’s care.
A visit to the vet found Mabel in much worse shape than originally imagined. Her advanced state of starvation left her not only with no fat reserves on her body, but no muscle mass at all. She was literally a skeleton being held together by skin. She was found to have kennel cough, open wounds on her body and demodex mange, which caused the loss of most of her hair and the constant skin loss.

“She could barely walk when she came to my house,” said Anna. “I had to wrap her in a towel to carry her everywhere. Her skin just sloughs off when you touch her.”

Mabel is also believed to have heartworm but has not been tested yet as her condition is too weak for her to be treated.  Mabel has been receiving intensive, tender-loving care from Anna for about a week now. She gets six or seven small meals a day, medication for her kennel cough and soothing baths for her skin condition. She has gained approximately six pounds and her personality is shining through. The change has been dramatic and her personality is coming through.

“She wags her tail and responds to every word you say,” Anna said. “She is so sweet, I have to stop myself from crying every time I look at her.”

Unfortunately, Mabel is just one of the many dogs that suffer this kind of abuse and neglect. We know we can't save them all, but it starts with caring for one.
